A Giving Story: Barb A. and the Huru Girls of Kenya

The holidays are a time for giving love, thanks, and appreciation. We also show support for causes we care about, and do what we can to help those in need. This holiday season, we wanted to share the story of one of our most generous supporters, Barb A., who has been involved with Huru for many years. Through her kindness and circle of supporters, she is single-handedly responsible for changing the lives of hundreds of girls and young women living in informal settlements across Kenya. Her impact has been profound. We are so grateful for her support and hope that her story will inspire others to give back however they can.

How did you first hear about Huru International?

I learned about Huru early on when Lorna Macleod, their founder, filled me in on the needs of vulnerable girls and young women in Kenya and how she was going to solve the problem.

What made you decide to give your first gift?

After working in Africa with Micato Safaris for 4 years, I left the company to get married and raise my now children. I knew then that a part of my heart would always be left in Kenya so I wanted to stay connected by doing something to give back. For me it began with clothing and school supply drives.

Why do you enjoy giving to Huru?

Because I know that the need is great and that it is an extremely well run organization.

What is your favorite Huru program to donate to?

My Mending A Life program has supported the Skills Development Program that uplifts young, unemployed women living in extreme poverty find financial and personal independence through job skills and wellness training. The trainees and graduates from this program also sew the reusable menstrual pads that are provided to help vulnerable girls stay in school. I’m happy that the program also helps these young girls because it is all so necessary.

Speaking of necessary, I also love and believe in AmericaShare’s one-for-one sponsorship program that changes lives through education. It was the first organization in 2001 that me, my friends and family began supporting and still do. This worthy program is run by Huru’s sister organization who also do great work helping youth from informal settlements.

Would you tell us about the Mending A Life donors?

These are my siblings and closest friends, who like me are passionate about helping those less fortunate through education and training programs that create personal independence and opportunity. We work together to support programs that make a real impact and transform lives. I couldn’t do what I do without them.

What do you hope to accomplish through your giving to Huru?

To change lives so that these young deserving people may change the lives of their families and communities.

What message would you like to convey to the girls and young women you help through Huru?

You are powerful, brave and strong. Whatever your dream, make it happen and we are here to support you.

How would you describe Huru to someone who's never heard of us?

It is a three prong organization that changes lives through programs that create personal independence for those lucky enough to be in it.

What do you wish everyone knew about Huru?

That there is no better organization to give to in Kenya.

This holiday season we hope you find ways to give back and that you consider contributing to Huru. Your support will make a world of difference to these vulnerable girls and young women. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Happy holidays!
