SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Our program aims to help women find a means toward economic stability, employment, financial independence, and optimism toward their future.
Through Huru’s extensive work distributing reusable menstrual pads and providing reproductive health and wellness education, we have the privilege of meeting adolescent girls and young women from all over East Africa, many of whom had already dropped out of school and were struggling to find work to support themselves and their families. This program was created to help those seeking a brighter future.
Meet our current class
This amazing group of young women have just begun our 4-month training program and will learning new job skills until November. From there, this class will be ready to find higher wage jobs or start their own businesses.
The generosity of Barbara Albert’s Mending A Life effort has provided the opportunity for this class to step into a brighter future.
We’re excited to see the class chase their dreams!
Past classes
This highly successful program has helped more than 400 women, due to the generosity of donors. Classes have been supported by Barbara Albert’s Mending A Life group and Signature Travel Network.

Youth Unemployment
1 in 5 Kenyans are between the ages of 15 and 24, and unemployment for this group is the highest of all East African nations. Covid-19 only exacerbated the problem, driving youth unemployment even higher. Women and girls are adversely affected by this: when they reach menarche, they drop out of school at higher rates than boys, limiting their employment opportunities.

In-demand Job Skills Training
Putting the needs of local women and industry realities at the center of our program, our Skills Development Program equips young women in Nairobi with essential, in-demand job skills and basic business acumen to pursue a higher wage job in the textiles or opening a local tailoring business.

Comprehensive Approach
The 4-month Skills Development Program builds garment production skills for the country’s growing textile industry. The program also provides lessons on business, finance, entrepreneurship, and health education to support well-rounded, educated, and skilled young women ready for employment.

Personal & Economic Independence
Our graduates are prepared to take the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) exam, a government-recognized certification, that when passed can be used to find suitable, higher-wage employment with regulated work conditions.
