Celebrating Devoted Girl Dads: Providing Menstrual Dignity

Father's Day and we are celebrating girl days who fight period poverty.

It’s Father’s Day! To celebrate this year, we want to honor the remarkable fathers from impoverished communities who champion their daughters' education and empowerment through menstrual health management. Despite facing incredible hardships, these fathers embrace the importance of nurturing paternal bonds, encouraging open dialogue, and providing unwavering support to cultivate resilient, empowered daughters.

In the informal settlements of Nairobi, Kenya, where economic instability and lack of social safety nets prevail, we meet many dedicated fathers like Stephen M., John W., and Peter O. who understand the importance of menstrual health. These dedicated men understand that access to menstrual products can often mean the difference between their daughters missing out on education or staying in school during their periods.

Breaking the Cycle of Period Poverty in Kenya

Vincent K., a community health volunteer, recalls the challenges girls faced during his youth. "There was a time when pads were not [widely] available, and girls and women used fabric." he says. Many girls would miss a lot of school or drop out of school entirely due to period poverty and stigma.

Vincent now notes a positive shift, thanks to work by organizations like Huru International. “Girls are becoming more empowered and fathers are recognizing the importance of menstrual hygiene.”

Some, like Stephen M., a security guard and father of three, were raised to cherish the importance of caring for siblings, especially sisters. He has carried those lessons into fatherhood, proactively discussing bodily changes and menstruation with his daughters from a young age to foster an environment of trust. Over the years, Stephen M. has remained dedicated to providing his daughters with essential menstrual products.

Prioritizing Girls' Education and Empowerment in Kenya

John W., whose daughter is in 7th grade, understands the significance of menstrual products in ensuring his daughter's education is not disrupted. "A girl who has pads to wear is comfortable, she can study well, she won't miss school, she'll attend school," he says. Despite financial challenges, John makes it a priority to provide for his daughter's needs, fostering an environment where she feels secure and supported.

Peter O., a casual laborer with a daughter in high school, echoes similar sentiments. "We really welcome Huru’s help, to make sure our daughters can finish school," he says, acknowledging the relief that Huru’s reusable pads can provide in alleviating the financial burden of purchasing disposable products.

Fostering Open Communication and Menstrual Health Support

Festus A., Huru's Senior Programs Officer and a father of two daughters, exemplifies the power of open communication and support. When his daughter experienced her period, she reached out to Festus, who embraced the moment with warmth and celebration.

Festus emphasizes the necessity of male involvement in normalizing menstruation in Kenya. "A father's love for his daughter is key to her development. Menstruation remains one of the major challenges our girls are facing. Emotional support from fathers is key to having a prosperous family with better health outcomes."

You Can Help Provide Menstrual Dignity

These fathers' stories serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that love, understanding, and support can have on a child's life. By fostering an environment of love at home and being understanding, fathers can empower their children to confront life's challenges with confidence and resilience, building stronger family bonds for generations to come.

Huru is committed to supporting these remarkable fathers and their daughters, ensuring that access to menstrual products and education is a reality for all girls in Kenya. Our Huru Kits provide girls with everything they need to manage their periods safely with dignity, including reusable pads, underwear, soap, and more.

You can be part of this mission by donating today to provide a Huru Kit for a girl in need. Your generous contribution will empower her to stay in school, pursue her dreams, and break the cycle of period poverty.
