Lifeline Response to Kenya’s Flood

On the front lines of Nairobi's flooding

As ongoing rains continue to impact areas in Kenya, nowhere is it felt more than in Nairobi County’s informal settlements. The flooding here has displaced thousands and disrupted much-needed infrastructure, underscoring the vulnerability of these communities.

The impact of the floods

Late April 2024 brought a deluge that drenched much of Kenya. The floods, caused by continuous heavy rainfall and poor infrastructure, damaged homes in impoverished communities and heightened the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera. Temporary camps are being setup to shelter those who have lost their homes.

Huru's ground response

In the midst of this crisis, our team at Huru International, together with Micato Safaris, AmericaShare, and local government and partners, has been working tirelessly to provide critical support. We are providing assistance at several evacuation centers throughout Mathare, a hard-hit impoverished community near Nairobi, including Heidemarie Primary School, Happy Star Academy, and others.

Huru prepares relief kits with sanitation, personal hygiene and clothes to be given to displaced women, men and children.

Our primary focus has been addressing the immediate needs for sanitation and personal hygiene. We are distributing menstrual packs, soap, and clothing items to those in need including women, men, girls and boys.

Challenges and ongoing efforts

The needs are enormous. One of the biggest challenges has been identifying those most in need in a constantly shifting environment. Regardless, we are committed to providing relief. Plans are in place to continue distributing additional supplies in the coming days.

How you can help

The journey to recovery from the floods will undoubtedly be long and filled with challenges. Huru is committed to supporting the affected communities for as long as it takes.

We ask for your support—through donations or by helping to spread the word—so we can continue providing essential assistance to those in urgent need.

Seeing Mathare's residents' resilience and spirit has been inspiring and humbling. Together, with ongoing support and collective effort, we can help tackle the challenges of this disaster and help the community emerge stronger.
